Nubo OS FAQ

Short, honest answers to the questions people ask first about Nubo OS: Ubuntu base, price, support period, apps, privacy and servers.

Answers come from the Nubo OS repository. Where something is not built or not confirmed, the answer says so.

The basics

Is Nubo OS Ubuntu?

It is based on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. The kernel, boot loader and nearly all packages are Ubuntu’s, unchanged. Nubo adds its own look, apps, helpers and a package archive. See What is different from Ubuntu. Nubo OS is not a Canonical product.

Who makes it, and is it free?

Chandorkar Technologies makes it. The download is free, and the code is public at github.com/Chandorkar-Technologies/nubo-os. The code is GPL-3.0-or-later; the Nubo name and logo files are trademarks, kept under a separate brand licence.

Which version is current?

Nubo OS 1 “Flow”, in beta. Read the exact build number on the download page.

How long is it supported?

Five years of security updates, to April 2031. See Updates and lifecycle.

Is it ready for my main computer?

It is a beta. Try it from a USB stick or a virtual machine, keep backups, and read the known issues.

Installing

Can I try it without installing?

Yes, with the live session from a USB stick. See Install Nubo OS.

Can I dual boot with Windows?

The installer is Ubuntu’s, so the usual dual-boot approach applies. Back up first.

Does Secure Boot work?

Yes on the desktop image.

Does the installer need the internet?

No, but it helps. If Nubo Cumulus cannot be reached, the installer falls back to the packages on the install media. First-boot app downloads need a network and retry on the next boot.

Does it run on Arm?

The packages build for amd64 and arm64. The arm64 desktop image has not been tested on real hardware. Server images for both are built for every release.

Software

What about snaps?

On first boot Nubo removes Ubuntu’s store snaps, the Firefox snap and the Thunderbird snap, and installs Firefox from Flathub. snapd stays on the desktop for the Nubo account sign-in broker. It is not installed on servers.

Which apps come installed?

Geary for mail plus GNOME’s Files, Calendar and Settings. With a network, Firefox, LocalSend, Newelle, Collabora Office, Shortwave, Spotify (x86 only) and VLC arrive from Flathub on first boot. LibreOffice is replaced by Collabora Office.

Can I still use apt?

Yes. Nubo packages are ordinary .deb files.

Is there a Nubo app store?

Planned, not built. Apps come from Flathub through the grey launchers and GNOME Software.

Does it run Windows apps?

Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office desktop apps and games with kernel-level anti-cheat are not supported. Office files open fine in Collabora Office.

Privacy

What does Nubo OS send out?

Crash reporting, login news, Ubuntu Pro services and the release-upgrade check are off. The connectivity check goes to Nubo and time comes from Cloudflare NTS and pool.ntp.org. Package downloads go through Nubo Cumulus with Ubuntu as fallback. Some Canonical contacts remain, such as the snap store.

Does it collect telemetry?

Nubo Search has system-info telemetry off. Nubo has not published any other telemetry. If you find an undocumented contact, email support@nubo.email.

Servers

Is there a server edition?

Yes: Server, Virtualization (Incus), Containers (Podman) and Edge. See Server editions.
